What do you do at RISCA?

I am excited to join the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) as the Atrium Gallery Assistant. I will be working closely with Elena Calderon Patino, Director of the Arts and Cultural Sustainability Program, assisting artists with the preparation, logistics and installation of their masterpieces. I currently volunteer as Treasurer on the board of the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island (CSRI). CSRI has been a part of the Rhode Island Expansion Art Program and has been an alumnus for many years. One of CSRI's primary goals is to continue preserving cultural and folk dance. Thus, the birth of their very own dance troupe, showcasing different types of traditional dance performed by youths between the ages of 4 and 18 years old.

What was a memorable arts and culture experience you had as a young person?

I have always loved and appreciated art as it is embedded within my culture. From the intricate carvings of sacred temples and the grand structure of Angkor Wat, one of the wonders of the world, to the weaving of traditional artifacts and garments, I find art very soulful. While my artistic ability is limited to drawing stick figures, I show my appreciation for art in the form of fashion.

One of the most memorable experiences I had was during a family trip to Japan. I was fascinated by the intricate designs and rich history of traditional Japanese clothing, particularly the kimono. The vibrant colors and detailed patterns sparked a greater love for fashion and art, leading me to incorporate these elements into my personal style. I began to blend traditional clothing with modern fashion, creating unique outfits that often-caught people's attention. This not only allowed me to express my creativity but also connected me to the cultural heritage that I deeply admire. Another unforgettable moment was creating art during a blizzard while wearing a saree. The juxtaposition of the delicate, elegant saree against the harsh, snowy backdrop was a profound expression of resilience and beauty.
